Variations in the concentrations of the hemoglobin derivatives in the blood and the activities of the enzymes in the importantorgans of the rabbits poisoned with carbon monoxide gas

Abstract
For the purpose of studying influence of carbon monoxide poisoning on the concentrations of the hemoglobin derivatives in the blood and the activities of the enzymes in the important organs of rabbits, the author made the following experiments:
1. Rabbits were poisoned with 5 volume per cent of CO in the air for 2 minutes in a gas chamber (Fig. 1) and thenceforth transferred to room air.
2. The concentrations of the carboxyhemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin, methemoglobin, and total hemoglobin in the blood of rabbits were measured immediately before, and at intervals of 3, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes after CO poisoning.
3. The activities of lactic dehydrogenase, choline estrase, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, and glutamicoxaloacetic transaminase in the blood of the rabbits poisoned with CO gas were measured at the above intervals of time.
4. Immediately after CO poisoning, the test animals were killed, and their brain, liver, kidney, and heart were excised. The activities of choline estrase, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, catalase, cyteine desulfhydrase, and sucinic dehydrogenase in the organs were measured and compared with those of normal rabbits.
These experiments have revealed the following results:
1. There was no variation in the concentrations of methemoglobin and total hemoglobin of the rabbits poisoned with CO gas.
2. carboxyhemoglobin concentration was increased and oxyhemoglobin concentration was decreased in
the blood of the rabbits poisoned with CO gas. After poisoning was terminated, the carboxyhmoglobin conyerted gradually to oxyhemoglobin.
3. Changes in the activities of the enzymes in the blood plasma and the organs of the rabbits poisoned with CO gas are shown in Table 15.
